SANDWAVE 2: TESSELLATION
WALNUT
50" x 16" x 2"
2021

The natural world that surrounds us is an ever-inspiring source of form, surface and creative energy at both the micro and macro scale. Whether it is a specimen, topography, or view, familiar landscapes from our daily lives provide us with a sense of place and forge an element of our identity.  Ripples in the sand are ubiquitous. They morph and change based on wind, water, and foot patterns, however they represent time as much as familiarity. Sand wave patterns come and go, but they represent a fingerprint of the earth for a moment of time, washed away with each coming tide. To preserve this, I employ digital technologies to capture these fingerprints as specimens of memory, touch, and locale, and further abstract them into objects with permanence. In this new body of work, I aim to combine my continued intrigue of found specimens from the natural world with a sense of place – in this case the transitional magic of the low-tide mud flats along Cape Cod Bay. Ultimately, these sand-wave compositions were born of both mystery and fascination, but more importantly represent a sense of longing amongst uncertainty for me. For the viewer, I hope to represent through these carvings the delicate and the temporal alongside the familiar.

Hand-crafted and available in various woods.
